National Philathropy: Literacy
WHAT IS LITERACY FOR SLU?
We believe literacy is power. We believe literacy is freedom. We believe literacy is lifelong learning. Literacy-- in all its forms -- empowers us to transform our lives for others and ourselves. The Sorority advocates for literacy as a means of ensuring the empowerment and success of our nation and the people of its diverse communities. We strive to encourage literacy as an activity that affords limitless possibilities and promotes reading and writing as enjoyable, exciting, and empowering.
The premise of our philanthropic work focuses on the power of literacy to uplift our communities and foster confidence in our young people, for them to advance toward their educational, personal, and professional goals. In turn, our children will be set on the right path toward establishing a foundation of success for our communities and our nation as whole.
SLU has participated in several programs focusing on fostering a positive attitude toward reading for the entire family and community. We have partaken in many literacy focused community service programs across the country such as partnering with local libraries for events, providing a list of books by Latino authors not typically found in libraries and obtaining copies of key novels in Spanish to ensure Latinos have access to reading signature cultural pieces. Additional initiatives and events include:
Bowling for Books
Jumpstart’s Read for the Record
World Book Night
Goodread’s Readathon
Citizenship ready classes English Translation for exam
